The needs of education throughout the city and state of New York vary on so many levels which is why so many educational leaders are needed to address these concerns. In the previous episode, David C. Banks, Chancellor of NYC Public Schools, addressed his vision for the upcoming school year. There are other city and state leaders who also have their insights. In part two of City & State’s 2022 Education in New York Summit held at the Jewish Heritage Museum, we hear from other leaders in public education weigh in on teacher retention, parental concerns, and student learning from K-12 to the college level.
The first panel, titled The Current State of Public Education in NY discusses the impact Covid-19 had on K-12 schools and the next steps to support our schools. The panel was led by David Bain, senior vice president of Analytics and innovation at Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. The panelists featured Betty A Rosa, Commissioner of the Education Department; Jeffrey A. Plaut, Founding partner of Global Strategy Group, and forever educator, Rita Joseph, NYC Council Member, Chair of the Education Committee.
The second panel titled Plans for Higher Education in the New Normal addressed the issues of connecting K-12 schools to higher education. The panel was moderated by Adam Balkin, an executive producer at CBS News. The panel included William Murphy, Higher Education Deputy Commissioner for the State Education Department; Eric Dinowitz, NYC Council Member, Chair of the Higher Education Committee; Joseph Scuralli, Dean for Online Education and Larry L. Luing School of Business at Berkeley College; Baron McCombs, Region Education Services specialist, first army recruiting brigade, of US Army NYC Recruiting Battalion; and Don Applyrs, managing director of network expansion at NAF.
