EPISODE THIRTY-ONE: DR. BRIAN JONES BOOK ABOUT THE TUSKEGEE STUDENT UPRISING

Dr. Brian Jones and Ms. Mac

When you think about the history of the Tuskegee Institute, now Tuskegee University, in Tuskegee, Alabama, notable figures include founder and scholar Booker T. Washington, scientist George Washington Carver, photographer Chester Higgins Jr., and World War II heroes, the Tuskegee Airmen. What also comes to mind is the infamous Tuskegee Syphilis Experiment

Famous Photographer and Tuskegee University alum, Chester Higgins Jr.

Another historical moment had been hidden until Dr. Brian Jones, the Director at the Center for Educators & Schools at the New York Public Library, decided to research more about it.  His book The Tuskegee Student Uprising: A History focuses on the successful student uprising at Tuskegee University by young black college students. I had a chance to talk to Dr. Brian Jones about his background in teaching and his journey to writing a book to document a moment in history that is relevant today.  You can grab a copy of his book from your local public library or wherever books are sold.
