NYC Teachers Ashley Canton-Birnbaum and Christine Sugrue with Nicola Giardina at Nicola’s Book signing at Greenlight Bookstore.
Let’s face it! Teachers never have time to go on field trips. It requires approval from the principal and your colleagues, permission slips, and time away from your daily curriculum. Yes there may be some setbacks, but the one misconception of it taking away from your curriculum is not true. For one year, Christine Sugrue, Carla Cherry, and myself had the opportunity to take our students to the Metropolitan Museum of Art leading lessons with the help of Met educator Nicola Giardina. This experience not only enriched the curriculum, but it helped students to not feel afraid of Art or the museums they reside in. Our conversation reflects our time with the Met. If you would like to know more about these lessons, check out Nicola Giardina’s book The More We Look, the Deeper it Gets: Transforming the Curriculum Through Art.
